ok now im pissed

basically this is cultural appropriation at its finest: i’m sure the artist is white, and only drew this for Year Of The Horse for a joke. Not surprised, considering what the banner is for.

So I saw this post reblogged to a friend’s blog, and I was struggling to understand “cultural appropriation”. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and here’s what I found:
“Cultural appropriation is the adoption of some specific elements of one culture by a different cultural group.”
Let’s examine what that actually means, shall we? Cultural appropriation is a form of mixing ideas from different cultures to create new ideas, and it’s been going on for years; from the renaissance era to otaku culture, the very language we speak, and the globalisation of media.
Some Americans listen to dubstep, which was originally a British genre. Is that “cultural appropriation”? What about an Englishman watching a Hollywood movie? The sped-up Japanese edit of Swedish song Caramelldansen, and the subsequent English translation? All of these things fit your definition of “appropriation”. That doesn’t make them at all bad.
If you’re honestly implying that the integration and acceptance of foreign cultural phenomena is an inherently bad thing, then you must be some sort of pro-segregation conservative extremist. Equestria Daily commissioned a new banner to celebrate a festival in another country. I fail to see the issue here; maybe they have readers in China who’ll be glad to be noticed, or maybe it’s a generally positive thing to educate people on the traditions of cultures other than their own. This is how new art is created, and it’s how people’s beliefs and cultures are introduced to new places.
Unless you think that we white people ought to stick to our own kind, and the Chinese ought to stick to theirs. In which case, I’ve just thought up a sweet little utopia for you. I’m sure you’d fit right in.
